The Times Higher Education (THE) Awards 2024 have unveiled their prestigious University of the Year shortlist, marking a significant milestone as this year celebrates the 20th anniversary of “the Oscars of higher education.”

This year’s awards received an unprecedented response, with over 700 entries submitted—nearly 100 more than the previous record. The awards highlight universities’ resilience and commitment to “transform lives for the better” during challenging times for higher education.
University of the Year Nominees
The six nominated universities represent exceptional achievements across various domains:
- London Metropolitan University: Recognized for its innovative student support initiatives and commitment to fostering social mobility.
- Ulster University: Celebrated for its pioneering work in cross-community education and significant contributions to economic and social development in Northern Ireland.
- University of Leicester: Acknowledged for impactful research and dedication to tackling social inequality, aligning academic pursuits with community needs.
- University of Stirling: Highlighted for its research in environmental sustainability, health, and well-being, making strides in these critical areas.
- University of Sunderland: Honoured for advancements in health and life sciences, along with a strong focus on producing career-ready graduates.
- University of Surrey: Commended for its emphasis on research innovation, employability initiatives, and global student engagement.
Award Ceremony Details
The winners will be announced on 28 November at Birmingham’s ICC, marking only the second time the ceremony has been held outside London.John Gill, THE’s editor, emphasized the awards’ significance, noting that they showcase the extraordinary dedication of university professionals who continue to transform lives despite current challenges.
